How could there ever be anyone who didn’t like Misha Collins? Sure, maybe you don’t like the character he plays on Supernatural, Castiel (although I certainly do), but not liking the man behind the angel is a universal impossibility. Not only is he adorable and hilarious, but he also founded a charity called Random Acts that seeks to fund three orphanages in Haiti and also bring joy to people all over the world through random acts of charity.

If you watch the video on the charity’s website, you’ll learn more about the charity itself and about the marathon that Misha will be running on September 5. You may also get a little tear in your eye – I certainly did – to see the charity give new furniture to seniors or toys to children in Mexico. And when Misha himself bought new shoes for a little boy who’s father had been recently laid off – well, that was the moment I realized he’s even more awesome than I thought.

Jon sat down with Misha (well, over the phone) to discuss the charity and to see if he could get any spoilers about season 6 of Supernatural.

Jon: How did this charity come about?

Misha: Basically, I’m trying to help galvanize my Twitter base to doing some cool projects together. I kind of noticed early on that there was a lot of people putting a lot of creative energy into being my Twitter followers or being Supernatural fans or whatever. And that it might be a worthwhile endeavor to try to harness some of that energy and focus to it into something kind of productive and kind. And so that is, in a nutshell, the genesis of the project. And it’s working surprisingly well. I mean, you know, it’s kind of amazing to be able to email someone and be like, “All right, well we’ve got a website up.” And to have that actually happen for free in a matter of a few days, that is quite a cool resource. So I’m thrilled with how it’s going so far. And I’m looking forward to finding out how it evolves in this nutshell.

It’s rare to catch “Supernatural” star Misha Collins in a serious moment, but when we had the chance to sit down with him at the recent Creation Entertainment Salute to “Supernatural,” we were expecting hijinks. After all, Collins has an… interesting history with Zap2it.

Sure enough, Collins requested that he do the interview with occasional co-star Rob Benedict sitting in his lap (a suggestion that Benedict quickly vetoed). Despite his mischievous nature, Collins did manage to focus his attention on his passion project, a charity called Random Acts, which encourages random acts of kindness worldwide.

You may know Misha Collins from his recent stint on Syfy’s “Stonehenge Apocalypse.” You certainly know him from his recurring role on CW’s Supernatural, where he plays the angel Castiel. But what you may not know is that he’s a marathon runner, and he’s putting his efforts into coordinating fandom’s energy into making the world a better place, one random act of kindness at a time.

It’s just the sort of subtle plan you’d expect from an angel.

What was the initial inspiration that motivated you to plan The Random Act charity?

I don’t know if I can pinpoint a specific instance. It’s something that sort of evolved over time. I go to Supernatural conventions, where the fans convene, and I see people putting in so much time and energy — people who give me incredible portraits of my character on the show, Castiel, painted in oils on a canvas that’s four feet wide and six feet tall; intricate sculptures that they make; things like that. And then, of course, online there are a million websites with very active forums and communities. And it seemed to me that it would be a travesty not to harness some of that creative energy and time that people are putting in on these efforts towards maybe a slightly more benevolent use.

So I think just seeing all of that, and seeing how enthusiastic my Twitter followers were, it just seemed like it was a good idea.
